Course Description

On the surface, probationary periods seem rather simple. An employee is given a year to prove they are a good fit for the job. But, as many agencies are now realizing, there can be challenges. What if, due to the employee’s shifting job responsibilities or leave, you are unable to make an appropriate determination at the end of the period? Must you notify employees when their probationary periods are coming to an end? Can you discipline or PIP someone during a probationary period? When re-instating or competitively hiring an employee, is a new probationary period required?

FELTG Instructor Ann Boehm will lead a discussion on all you need to know.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Classify employment status and define probationary status.
  • Follow appropriate procedures for pre- and post-employment removal of probationary employees.
  • Determine when prior service counts toward completion of probation.
