On the surface, probationary periods seem rather simple. An employee is given a year to prove they are a good fit for the job, and if they aren’t, it’s an easy separation process, right? Generally, yes, but there can be challenges. What if you are unable to make an appropriate determination at the end of an employee’s probationary period? Must you notify employees when their probationary periods are coming to an end? Can you discipline or PIP someone during their probationary period?
This course will answer all your questions about probationary periods, whether it’s after hiring or related to reinstating an employee. Attendees will learn the impact of reinstatement authority on the probationary period, gain an understanding of the importance of the probationary period, and become familiar with OPM’s 2023 guidance on Maximizing Effective Use of Probationary Periods.

Want to reduce conflict, increase productivity, and limit absenteeism, turnover, and even removals? That’s impossible, you say. Maybe not. Most Federal agencies settle employment disputes — whether they are initiated as grievances, EEO complaints, or appeals of agency disciplinary actions. While it’s common to assume that settlement means the agency has a flaw in its case, it has no direct tie to liability or admissions of wrongdoing. Often, it’s…
So far, 2026 is a year of continued changes in the Federal workforce, and one of the hottest topics just got an overhaul: Telework as Reasonable Accommodation. By Deborah J. Hopkins, July 14, 2026 Another week in America, and another politician is accused of sexual impropriety including sexual assault. And as always happens, strong feelings emerge from people in support of the alleged victim – and people in support of the alleged perpetrator. All before any investigation…
By Deborah J. Hopkins, July 7, 2026 It’s rare we at FELTG comment on proposed regulations – after all, proposed regulations are regularly changed, sometimes significantly based on public comment, before becoming final. It’s usually not worth getting all spun up over something that’s only at the proposal stage. That…
By Deborah J. Hopkins, June 23, 2026 Sometimes, an employee suffers from a medical condition that renders him unable to work. It’s sad when this happens, but it also requires the agency to take action because presumably the agency needs someone in the position who can actually perform the work.…
By Deborah J. Hopkins, January 20, 2026 Medical documentation is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of employee leave requests, and is complicated further when the employee is a qualified individual with a disability, and his leave request doubles as a request for reasonable accommodation. A recent MSPB case…
