Webinar — How to Use a PIP in 2024
May 7 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Course Description

Federal supervisors have a useful tool to deal with underperforming employees – the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). Yet, supervisors have consistently struggled with getting PIPs right. And then came the decision in Santos v. NASA, which requires agencies to have substantial evidence of poor performance BEFORE the implementing the PIP. Part of the Managing the Federal Workplace in 2024: Dos and Don’ts for Supervisors webinar series, this class will detail the ins and outs of this requirement and share clear guidance and the effective, time-tested FELTG approach to handling unacceptable performance in 2024.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Gather the information needed prior the PIP process.
  • Discern the difference between substantial and other types of evidence.
  • Confidently handle unacceptable performance through the use of PIPs.

Webinar — Coaching for Individuals and Teams – Tips for Supervisors
Jun 4 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Course Description

Working with a skilled coach can transform individuals and teams. When coaching an individual supervisor, the coach creates a safe and confidential space to clarify issues. A client learns to maximize strengths and minimize self-sabotage, and to improve communication (up, down, and across the organization). When working with a team, the coach employs observation, discussion and assessments to understand and minimize unproductive conflict and maximize the talents and perspectives of team members. During this hour-long class, participants will learn what to expect when working with a coach, the complementary roles of a facilitator, consultant, and coach, and examples of positive outcomes for individuals and teams. This training is part of the Managing the Federal Workplace in 2024: Dos and Don’ts for Supervisors webinar series.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Maximize the unique talents of individuals in your agency
  • Create a safe space for problem solving in the workplace

Virtual Training Event – Creating Inclusivity: Neurodivergence in the Federal Workplace
Jun 6 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Download Individual Registration Form

Course Description

Neurodiversity refers to the diversity in how people think, learn, and behave – it’s the idea that people interact with their environment in many ways. Neurodiversity is also inclusive of individuals with learning differences, autism spectrum disorders, or other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD.

Research estimates that around 1 percent of the population has an autism spectrum disorder, between 5-9 percent are estimated to have a learning disability and just under 10 percent have a diagnosis of ADHD. The ability to recruit and retain neurodivergent employees will make your agency more diverse — and effective.

In this two-hour virtual training event, FELTG Instructor Shana Palmieri, LCSW will provide an overview of diagnoses that fall under the term “neurodivergence” and share guidance on how to best create an inclusive workplace.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Recognize the strengths and challenges individuals may bring to the workplace.
  • Use a strength-based management approach to create a supportive workplace.
  • Identify workplace accommodations for qualified individuals.

Assessing Risk and Taking Action: Threats and Violence in the Federal Workplace
Jul 30 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Description

Whether it’s a disgruntled employee or customer, or a domestic issue that follows an employee to work, workplaces are at a distinct risk of violent incidents. And that risk is heightened when it’s a Federal workplace. Earlier this year, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a “deeply disturbing spike” in threats against Federal workers.

How do you prepare yourself to protect the lives of those around you? Are there risk factors that might give you an indication of when someone will become violent? What can you do to help prevent a violent tragedy occurring where you work?

This topic is too important to ignore. FELTG Instructor Shana Palmieri, LCSW will present Assessing Risk and Taking Action: Threats and Violence in the Federal Workplace. Ms. Palmieri, who specializes in mental health and handled the aftermath of the Navy Yard shooting in 2013, will cover:

  • Warning signs that violence may be imminent, and dynamic risk and protective factors for workplace targeted violence
  • Creating an internal threat assessment investigation
  • Equipping Threat Management Teams to respond to threats or violent acts
  • Understanding the personality traits and cognitive issues that contribute to violent behavior – and those that don’t
  • Domestic or intimate partner violence and the Federal workplace

This training event will include time for Q & A on these topics.
